Martin Black has been involved in sessions all his life. Recently he has partnered up with Mary Begley, from the famous family of Begleys from Kerry, who plays traditional music on the button accordion and concertina. The session usually starts with Mary leading with traditional tunes and Martin accompanying her on fiddle, guitar or mandolin. But the moment always comes for a song and once Martin starts singing he will inevitably draw in the listeners around him and encourage them to join in with their own songs. The content of a typical session has developed into a range of songs which may be either traditional or contemporary. Singer songwriters are always given a huge welcome in one of these sessions. "My job is to make sure the evening runs smoothly" says Martin. "Every session is unique. Whether the session is quiet or busy one thing is certain. People will feel a sense of community and bonding by the end of the session and this is due to the diversity of music, song and stories."
